Low-Calorie Diet Programs

Low calorie diets (LCD), and very low calorie diets (VLCD), are effective weight loss programs designed for those individuals wishing to lose large amounts of weight safely and quickly. With careful medical monitoring, patients can lose 2-7 pounds per week on low calorie diets.

In a typical 18-week program, weight loss between 40 and 100 pounds can be achieved. If more weight loss is required, Drs. Pollard and Haase will extend the duration of the program to accommodate your needs.

What Does the Program Include?

Low calorie diets include full or partial meal replacement with medical weight loss formulas such as MEDIFAST. These products use precise portion control, stimuli narrowing and high protein, low carbohydrate formula to help you lose fat while conserving muscle mass and avoiding cravings and hunger.

Glycemic Control Program

Commonly referred to as “low-carb” diets, Glycemic Control relies on a concept called the “glycemic load,” or GL, which ranks carbohydrates by how dense they are in sugars relative to fiber. The lowest end of the index take longer to digest. Slow digestion wards off hunger pains and helps to stabilize insulin levels. Foods high on the glycemic load include bread, white potatoes, and pasta, while low-glycemic foods include leafy vegetables, some whole grains, some fruit, lentils, and soybeans.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. BMI does not measure body fat directly, but research has shown that BMI is moderately correlated with more direct measures of body fat obtained from skinfold thickness measurements, bioelectrical impedance, densitometry (underwater weighing), dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and other methods 1,2,3. Furthermore, BMI appears to be as strongly correlated with various metabolic and disease outcome as are these more direct measures of body fatness 4,5,6,7,8,9. In general, BMI is an inexpensive and easy-to-perform method of screening for weight category, for example underweight, normal or healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.

Diet & Nutrition

Many of our programs at PCHW involve reducing and monitoring your caloric intake. However, when we’re talking about “diet”, we’re not just talking about a short term (and frustrating!) plan to eat less. By examining the nutritional density and value of foods, you’ll learn not “how to diet” but how to make better choices, allowing your diet to work for you, not leave you starving and feeling deprived. Our nutritional experts will devise the best, most effective nutrition and fitness plan that incorporates your health concerns, your goals and your lifestyle, making it as simple as possible to integrate the dietary changes into your day.

Lifestyle Coaching & Motivation

We understand that weight loss is so much more than just a physical problem and incorporates issues such as: discipline, motivation, and even forgiveness. Each of these extenuating factors plays a role in successful weight management. Here at PCHW we offer personal counseling from our highly qualified experts in the fields of behavioral weight loss, exercise, relaxation techniques, stress management and lifestyle strategies.

Drs. Pollard and Haase and their qualified staff will work with you to clarify your challenges, leverage your gifts, and make powerful choices, focusing squarely on your success and happiness.
